An Evening Walk Before the Winter's Solstice

Rachel was about to take her regular walk to the local store for a few grocery supplies; she closed the door behind her and stepped outside. The sun was setting rapidly, coloring the bare trees and the few evergreens, while a chilly wind has started to whisper, like if there was an innocent secret ready to be revealed. She stood still, looking and admiring the endless sky, the amazing fiery colors on the west, and the silvery, fluffy white clouds on the east, that looked like they carried all the winter's frosty magic. As she was following the path towards the shopping park, her eyes were still staring at the beauty around her in full admiration, as the playful winter clouds, the giant shapeshifters of the sky were taking their course for their long seasonal journey. Without realizing it, a smile of gratitude appeared on her face; gratitude for all that she have had, there, in her beloved England. When she entered the store, she scented the tempting smell of cinnamon and the creamy sweetness of butter, as freshly baked croissants were just out of the oven, free for everyone to taste a bite! A short while after she had picked up the supplies she needed for a nice, tasty dinner, she heard some women at the tills singing together, peacefully and gracefully, embarrassing the coming of the festive season.

When she walked outside, the night had already spread its dark-blue veils across the small town, with its stars glittering in the mesmerizing winter sky. From the wooden, dusty smell that came out of the chimneys, she already felt it's Christmas time! She carried the few supplies bought from the store to the central park that lies between her house and the few local shops and decided to rest for a few minutes, on a bench next to an old, 19th-century church. Her heart was beating rhythmically, and just a few seconds later, its beats were followed by the soft sound of the church's old, rusty bells. It was almost the time her partner was coming back from work, so she took her way back in order to prepare a tasteful, warm supper, to enjoy it along with her loved one. As she was walking towards home, she noticed that the path beneath her feet was covered with a thin layer of ice, and it was glistening under the pale silvery moonlight. With every inhalation, she could sense the metallic, smoky scent of ice, and it was so refreshing and relaxing as if she could actually smell snow, a captivating perfume no man can recreate. Finally, she reached her front door, and took a last look around her; the sky was almost clear now, with just a few clouds crossing it, like harried travelers going to a faraway place so they can be joined together. She really enjoyed her walk, and even though it was just a short walk to the local store, she did feel alive, and happy, and now ready to cook and rest inside her warm and cozy house, besides her downy cat, and in the arms of her loved one!
